Welcome to the “Let Our River Flow” website.  This site has been created by the concerned citizens of Belize to spread the message of what is really occurring with the proposed Hydro-electric dam on Central River in Toledo, Belize.  This alarming, and poorly planned development project threatens some of the most pristine ecosystems of Central America in the Bladen Nature Reserve (www.yct.bz/bladen_nature_reserve.html).  If implemented, the dam will disrupt endemic flora and fauna, affect water availability to local communities, and increase sedimentation discharge to the Mesoamerican reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Please browse the site and feel free to blog your updates here or send emails to [email protected]  to contribute.  We welcome open and honest discussion about what is occurring on the ground and will do our best to feed you the information you deserve.

Who owns the land where the developers are working? Wouldn't they have to buy it and if it is in a Nature Reserve, wouldn't that mean some kind of de-classification of the Reserve? Is that an angle of stopping this? Surely the Government will not want to sell pristine habitat to foreign developers...for cheap at least!

Hi John,

Bladen is a public protected areas, therefore owned by the government. It would indeed need to reclassified for a dam to be built in the nature reserve, this however is not difficult to do and is totally within the powers of the Minister of Natural Resources.

We are hoping that they will indeed never sell this land, but stranger things have happened. All is would take is de-reservation and the government would be within in completely authority to sell it. Thus the reason our protected areas system needs a stronger legal framework. The NGOs are working on this.

South Coast CSD has supported the local community fight against the desecration of Forest reserves at SPC and Bladen from the beginning. What has happened is an outrage. The world will judge the Government of Belize by how it handles this.
Please also note that our barrier reef is now on the official "threatened" list by UNESCO
